Q&A Medicated Chick Starter

Patrick – Are you using a medicated feed at this stage? [Almost out of brooder.]

Charles – If you’re raising organic poultry you can not use medicated feed and the market pastured poultry is in doesn’t want chickens that have been fed antibiotics. The reason medicated feed is so popular is because most chickens in the United States are raised in confinement houses or CAFOS. Because of the unsanitary conditions the chickens are kept in it is almost impossible to keep them alive without antibiotics.

If you are using proper flock management (clean dry bedding, clean feed, clean water, probiotics in feed, etc.) you will probably never have a problem with coccidiosis or some other issue where you would need medicated chick starter. However if you do have a problem with your chickens I suggest checking out: ‘Remedies for Health Problems of the Organic Laying Flock’ by Karma E Glos for homeopathic alternatives. You should be able to find a free pdf by googleing. There are other remedies specific to broilers that are not covered by this book.

If you really want to dive into homeopathic remedies check out the American Pastured Poultry Producers Association (APPPA) and become a member, you get access to their Yahoo Group where you can gets lots of feedback for specific situations and answers to your questions.
